The Lahore Board is the mainstay of education in the country. It is regarded as Pakistan’s largest educational board. Every year, this board examines around 2 million students in matriculation and intermediate exams.
Since Pakistan’s independence in 1947, matriculation and intermediate level examinations have been held under the auspices of the University of the Punjab. The Punjab University Act (Amendment) Ordinance 1954, however, formed the Board of Secondary Education, Punjab in the province, taking management of secondary, intermediate, and Pakistani and classical language examinations from the stated university. The first ever examination for these levels was held in 1955. Due to the large number of candidates, two new boards were formed in Multan and Sargodha under West Pakistan Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Multan and Sargodha) Ordinance No.XVII of 1968.
